Community Action Partnership of Madison County looking for mentors

Canastota, N.Y. >> Community Action Partnership is looking for mentors to help guide local youths.

The CAP Mentoring Program is in need of mentors for youths ages 8-15, as well as group activity organizers to share their expertise.

Recently, the Tri-Valley Warriors Minor League Football team dedicated their game to the CAP Mentoring Program. Coach Justin Acker greeted the youngsters before the game started. The day started with a picnic in the park, and the kids were excited to be at a football game. At half time, the announcer called each child by name as they ran out on the field. Mentees were able to meet and greet the players and have a picture taken with the team. Most of them had never been to a football game before.

CORE Federal Credit Union’s Community Grant Program supports local non-profits

MORRISVILLE >> CORE Federal Credit Union recently awarded a number of grants to not-for-profit and community organizations located in or serving Madison County through its eighth annual Community Grant Program.

Grant dollars were awarded based on the needs of the organization applying, the program’s projected impact on the community, and the number of requests received. CORE received grant requests from more than 30 groups throughout Madison County totaling more than $23,000.

Early Head Start family picnic stresses fun, education

ONEIDA >> Community Action Partnership of Madison County’s Early Head Start program (EHS) hosted a picnic for families and friends at Allen Park on June 5.

Families participated in a variety of age appropriate activities to increase children’s interest in science and math such as a treasure hunt in a sensory bin filled with dried corn or a race track made out of pool noodles cut in half. A Madison County Head Start representative was also on hand to discuss Head Start application and referral for older children. Though the weather was a bit blustery the children took pleasure in group play, lunch, and summer fun activity bags.

Madison County employers commit to improving colorectal cancer screenings

MORRISVILLE >> Several Madison County employers received Recognition and Appreciation Certificates for signing the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable (NCCRT) “80% by 2018” Pledge at the Worksite Wellness Coalition Meeting on June 7.

The “80% by 2018” Pledge is an NCCRT initiative in which more than 1,500 organizations have committed to substantially reducing colorectal cancer as a major public health problem and working toward the shared goal of 80 percent of adults 50 and older being regularly screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.

Road Rally aids Community Action Partnership’s mission to support Madison County

Canastota, N.Y. >> The Community Action Partnership of Madison County hosted its first Road Rally, showing residents just what they do to help the community.

The Road Rally fundraiser invited local residents to come out with their cars and ride through Madison County, participating in a scavenger hunt for a chance to win a prize basket. The route took participants around Madison County, from Chittenango and Cazenovia to Canastota and Wampsville.
